Elegant diamond necklace, 1950s
鑽石項鏈,1950年代
Set with graduated brilliant-cut and baguette diamonds, length approximately 370mm, French maker's and assay mark for platinum.
Since the late 1940s, there has been a revival of Parisian fashion, driven notably by Dior's New Look. If the outfits adapted to the day or evening occasions, the jewellery then followed this same trend. Evening wear with more open necklines was de rigueur, so the necklaces find a place of predilection in women’s dresses of that time. In her book entitled Jewels of the 50s (1987, Les éditions de l'amateur), jewellery historian Melissa Gabardi confirms that “necklaces, in their great diversity, are undoubtedly the most typical and more worn in the 1950s. […] In the 1950s it was the short necklaces inherited directly from the fashion of previous years, and the chokers in the line of ‘dog collars’ which were the predilection of the female public”. If yellow gold is preferred during daytime, platinum set with diamonds was clearly favoured for the evenings! One of the classics of high jewellery was the collar necklace with several rows of diamonds, often composed of a choker in baguette-cut diamonds adorned with other rows or volutes, alternating between baguettes and brilliants.
