The successor to the reference 2915, which was the first Speedmaster introduced in 1957, the reference 2998 adopted the black aluminum bezel as well as the luminous 'Alpha' hands that were used at the end of the previous generations’ run. The case back also moved the ‘Speedmaster’ moniker to the center above the hippocampus and Omega logo. The 2998 was in production from 1959 until 1962 and became the first reference of the Speedmaster to travel to space on the wrist of ‘Wally’ Shirra in 1962.
The present lot is retained in attractive condition with applied Omega logo on the dial and is further equipped with a later-added bracelet in addition to the vintage one, rendering this example a very wearable piece.
