Description

Archimedes. Opera non nulla a Federico Commandino Urbinate nuper in Latinum conversa, et commentariis illustrata (Commentarii in opera non nulla Archimedis). Venice: Paolo Manuzio, 1558


The first Commandino edition, and the second in Latin, of the writings of the great Greek mathematician, physicist, and engineer. Commandino was able to make use of a manuscript from the library of Cardinal Bessarion in order to correct the text for his translation.


2 parts in one volume, folio (310 x 210 mm). Roman and italic type, 54 lines plus headline (variable). collation: *4 A-O4 [a]2 b-r4: 126 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device within garland on title-pages and final versos, woodcut diagrams, historiated woodcut initials. (Occasional light dampstaining and spotting, a few short marginal tears.)


binding: Contemporary limp vellum (316 x 220 mm), manuscript lettering along spine, stubs from two pairs of ties. (Sewing at head- and tail-piece reinforced, somewhat darkened and stained.)
