Patek Philippe's partnership with Tiffany & Co. began in 1851, making Tiffany the brand's first American retailer. From the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, the U.S. government imposed significantly higher import duties on complete precious-metal timepieces than on uncased movements and components. As Patek Philippe's movements were already costly to manufacture, importing only the movements and fitting them with locally made cases became a commercially sensible solution. Beyond the economic advantages, local case production also allowed retailers to better accommodate the preferences of their clientele. Unlike their Swiss counterparts, American-made cases of the period were generally heavier, more robust, and often more elaborately constructed.
