Born in the Vallée de Joux, Louis Audemars began his horological career at the age of 16 as an apprentice to Philippe Meylan. He quickly earned a reputation for the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of his watch movements. All eight of his sons joined the family business, specializing in the production of finished movements and, around 1837, developing the keyless winding and setting mechanism that became known as the Audemars system.

By 1848, the firm had expanded into the manufacture of complete watches. Renowned for its technical excellence, Audemars became one of the most respected names in Swiss watchmaking, supplying highly complicated watches and movements to leading Swiss and French maisons, including Le Roy, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin.
