Edward Barnard & Sons, one of the most prolific manufacturing silversmiths in Victorian London, and Reid & Sons, retail goldsmiths of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, were connected by family as well as business ties. Mary Barnard (1792-1845) and Elizabeth Barnard (1794-1870), two daughters of Edward Barnard (1767-1855), senior partner of Barnard & Sons, were married respectively to the brothers William Ker Reid (1787-1868) and David Reid (1792-1868), sons of Christian Ker Reid (1756-1834) who founded Reid & Sons in 1788. Other relations were Anna Barnard (1827-1898), daughter of John Barnard (1797-1880) and granddaughter of Edward Barnard who married Edward Ker Reid (1821-1886), a son of William Ker Reid. Anna's mother was Margaret (1802-1862) whose brother, the scientist Michael Faraday (1791-1867) was the husband of Sarah (1800-1879), another daughter of Edward Barnard.
