This is the larger of two Texan Highway gouaches that were painted alongside twenty-or-so other gouaches that Lanyon painted while teaching at the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute (in San Antonio, Texas) between the 7th and 28th of March 1963. During this time in San Antonio, Lanyon travelled on weekend visits to Piedras Negras, Eagle Pass, Saltillo and the Gulf of Mexico, taking photographs along the way. He was particularly impressed by the rich colours of the houses he saw during his trip to Piedras Negras.
This larger Texan Highway belongs to an important group of works that led to significant new developments in Lanyon’s painting after his return to Cornwall in April 1963. Other oil paintings which emerged from this time include Texan Landscape, Texan Belle, Eagle Pass, Saltillo and Mexico.
