Description
George Halley Ballgown with Ivory Three-Dimensional Flower Heads, late 1960s, designed with a full blue taffeta skirt with a layered tulle petticoat, labeled, bust: 34 inches, 86 cm, waist: 26 inches, 66 cm
George Halley (b.11th December 1930) was born in Ohio and grew up milking cows on his family's farm. As a young man, he hitchhiked to New York to pursue his dreams of becoming a fashion designer. He secured a job as a porter at Lord & Taylor and proceeded to gain experience with numerous designers, including Charles James. Halley was won the Coty Award in 1968 and his designs caught the eye of Diana Vreeland. Once fired for creating gowns that were too 'individualistic', Halley's romantic and joyful designs are known for their exquisite workmanship. Women's Wear Daily described him as 'a designer in a lovely world of his own'.
