Travelling cabinets, sumptuously adorned with architectural designs and landscapes in marquetry, were popular luxury items from the second half of the 16th century, particularly in Augsburg. The availability of a variety of indigenous woods and the invention of improved types of saws, fueled the development of furniture production in this city which in turn influenced other artistic centers in Austria and Italy.
