The five-clawed dragon was used only by close members of the imperial family. The profile view indicates the present roundel likely came from one of the lower front panels or shoulder of an imperial robe. The side-facing view may also signal that the robe was to be worn by a prince since the emperor's formal ceremonial garments feature roundels with frontal facing dragons. A yellow-ground embroidered roundel was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 26th November 2014, lot 3413.
