The type is known in four other replicas (for a list see Fittschen and Bergemann 2015, p. 63, note 3): in the J. Paul Getty Museum (Fittschen and Bergemann cit., Beilage 8a-b), in Lancut Castle (Fittschen and Bergemann cit., Beilage 8d), in the Danish National Museum (Fittschen and Bergemann cit., Beilage 9) and in the Wallmoden Collection (Fittschen and Bergemann cit., p. 62, no. 9). The Greek original was created in the Hellenistic period.

Leandro Biglioschi was one of Canova’s three studio assistants. He was made Regent of the 'Virtuosi al Pantheon' (the papal honour society of artists) in Rome in 1821. Prior to this honour, Canova himself commissioned Biglioschi to carve four marble busts for the Pantheon which are now in the Musei Capitolini. It is likely that Biglioschi restored the present statue.

The statue belonged to a group of sculptures sold by the Königliche Museen Berlin in 1922. Among these sculptures were an over-lifesize statue of Silvanus and a small statue of a seated woman, both now on the French art market.
