Internationally renowned BAMBI awards have been around since 1948, at that time they were focused on the German movie industry. Originally nominees were voted for by readers of Film Review magazine. The first recipient was actor Marika Rökk, and it was her daughter, who gave the award the “Bambi” moniker, after Felix Salten's deer in his children’s book Bambi, A Life in the Woods.
Now the award is presented to those "with vision and creativity who affected and inspired the German public". Individuals who have made a significant cultural contribution in Germany and from further afield. Asides from Udo, winners include, amongst many others, Heinz Rühmann, Peter Alexander, O. W. Fischer, and Johannes Heesters, Sophia Loren, Maria Schell, Rock Hudson, Franz Beckenbauer, Pierre Brice, and Céline Dion.
