Description
Four Georgian Silver-Gilt Salts, Paul Storr, London, 1815 / John Bridge, London, 1827
Plain shallow bowls supported by four serpents whose interlaced bodies form raised handles, detachable liners with egg and dart rims, engraved with chained lion passant crest and Viscount’s coronet, marked on bases and liners, comprising a pair by Storr ,1815, stamped 390; and a pair by Bridge, 1827; three liners by Storr, 1815, stamped 390; one by Bridge, 1827. Together with four silver-gilt Salt Spoons with serpent-wrapped stems, female mask terminals and double shell bowls, comprising a pair by Edward Farrell, 1818, and two by Francis Higgins, 1853 and 1859

A similar set of salts, by Storr, 1815, but with partly gadrooned bodies is illustrated in N.M. Penzer, Paul Storr, the last of the Goldsmiths , 1954, pp.194-5, pl.LVIII. Penzer notes a pair at the Victoria and Albert Museum, without gadrooning. A pair also without gadrooning, 1812, were in the Lillian and Morrie Moss Collection, illustrated in their catalogue, 1972, pp.70-71, pl. 9. A set of four of 1815, with gadrooning, was sold Christie’s London, 21 March 1979 (perhaps the same examples as in Penzer).
