Crimson red is a historically significant color, originally derived from the kermes insect and known for its deep, rich hue with subtle purple undertones. The term “Crimson” traces back to medieval Latin and Arabic roots, symbolizing luxury and nobility across cultures –from Polish aristocracy to Nepal’s national flags. In gemology, the term Crimson Red has gained prominence as a trade term for exceptional rubies.

In 2023, the Gübelin Gem Lab introduced the term “Crimson Red” as a new trademark colour for rubies of intense red colour but with little or no UV fluorescence. This characteristic distinguishes rubies from Pigeon Blood Red rubies, historically from Burma, which exhibit a pronounced fluorescence giving them their signature glow.

“Crimson Red” gives well-deserved recognition to untreated rubies, found beyond the Himalayan metamorphic belt, of exceptional colour and of equally perfect hue, tone and saturation. Only about 1% of Gübelin-tested rubies meet these stringent criteria, emphasizing their rarity.

Beyond gemstones, crimson red remains culturally resonant – evoking passion in art, prestige in academia and courage in military regalia. Its enduring allure, from ancient days to modern jewels, underscores a timeless fascination with this vivid embodiment of red’s most luxurious ideal.
