8vo, first edition, THE AUTHOR'S COPY WITH EXTENSIVE REVISIONS FOR HIS NEW EDITION OF THE TEXT PUBLISHED IN 1976, with deletions, text changes, and short additions neatly written in pencil, also 31 short typescript insert slips pasted into the book, further marks and cancels where the existing text is substituted for new typescript copy (see previous lot), with revisions throughout and to almost every page except those marked for cancellation, with markings for the editor (each page with revision marked with a red cross and each page requiring separate typescript insert marked in green), pencil note on front free endpapers headed "Printer's copy - revised version" explaining the system of revisions, original cloth with label on upper cover ("MAGUS | Old text with alterations"), binding lightly soiled


This is the copy of the first edition of The Magus that Fowles supplied to his publisher, Jonathan Cape, in preparation for his revised edition of the text (1976). This copy was intended to be used alongside the copious typescript pages of new text that Fowles wrote when revising his novel (see previous lot).
