This Swedish historical fantasy film was written and directed by Ingmar Bergman.
The Seventh Seal, set in Sweden during the Black Death, follows a medieval knight's (Max von Sydow) journey and his chess game with Death (Bengt Ekerot), who has come to claim his life. The film explores themes of faith, mortality and the search for meaning in a world ravaged by plague. The film is considered one of the greatest films of all time, launching a new era of international arthouse cinema, and it firmly established Bergman as a world-class director.
