Description

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE

CORRESPONDANCE DE NAPOLÉON IER PUBLIÉE PAR ORDRE DE L'EMPEREUR NAPOLÉON III. PARIS: IMPRIMERIE IMPÉRIALE, 1858-1869

32 volumes, 4to, later cloth, spines with black morocco lettering-pieces and arms of Napoleon stamped in black, uncut, occasional light foxing

A monumental edition of Napoleon's correspondence, initially prepared by Achille Fould and a committee of dignitaries; a second committee was appointed in 1864 which decided to alter texts as it thought appropriate, rather than faithfully following the originals. The letters start from 25 October 1793, when Napoleon was in charge of the artillery in the army in the south, and ends with accounts of his exile on St Helena.
