Description

AN ILLUSTRATION FROM A RAGAMALA SERIES: KAKUBHA RAGINI, INDIA, RAJASTHAN, BUNDI, LATE 18TH CENTURY

gouache hieghtened with gold on paper, text panel at top, narrow inner black border, wide red outer borders

painting: 30.1 by 17.6cm.

leaf: 39.5 by 26.4cm.

The iconography of Kakubha Ragini represents a lonely lady startled by the call of a cuckoo. However, the iconography usually depicts a lady in a forest holding flowers with peacocks nearby, as seen here (see Ebeling 1973, pp.101, no.C38, 259, no.253).
