Description
GREECE AND THE LEVANT, A PRIVATE LIBRARY, LOTS 157-213
CORONELLI, VINCENZO MARIA
Description geographique et historique de la Morée. Paris: Nicolas Langlois, 1687
First French folio edition, folio (363 x 227mm.), 22 double-page engraved plates, 17 full-page plates (each showing 2 subjects) and 4 half-page plates, contemporary calf, seemingly (see footnote) lacking folding map, one double-page plate, 6 full-page plates and list of plates at end, binding rather worn
There is a certain amount of confusion surrounding the plates in works by Coronelli because they were added, removed and changed as Coronelli chose; he also used the same series of plates in different combinations which he dedicated to various important political figures in Venice. The four single plates depict Coron, Forte Torreta, Porto di Cerigo and Dardanelli di Lepanto.
LITERATURE:
Atabey 287; not in Blackmer
PROVENANCE:
George MacKenzie, armorial bookplate; Les Mis. de Courtanvaux, ink stamps
