Description

OMAN--GODDARD & GIBBS STUDIOS

Four watercolour designs for stained glass windows for Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and a stained glass portrait of Sultan Qaboos for the Central Bank of Oman, [1996-c.2000]

5 watercolours and gouache on paper (from 170 x 130mm. to 180 x 240mm.) on 4 card mounts, 2 with tracing paper overlays, each preserved in an archival sleeve

The portrait of Sultan Qaboos bears the name of John Lawson (1932-2009), the chief artist for Goddard & Gibbs Studios, who was considered one of the leading stained-glass artists of his generation. In Oman, Lawson's windows helped create the unique ambience in the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which the sultan has described as "the crowning glory of Oman".
