A member of a large artistic family, Mattheus Terwesten was a successful painter of portraits, and also historical compositions and decorative paintings. After working for some time in Italy, he was appointed court painter to Frederick William I of Prussia and professor of the Prussian Academy of Arts. For further information, see R.L. Colella and W.
