Description

Crocker-Wheeler Electric, Co.

Electric Motor, ca. 1893.

½ h.p. Type C Direct Current Electric Motor, Crocker-Wheeler Electric, Co, New York, NY, after May 5, 1891, mixed materials, approx. 13 x 10½ x 12⅜ inches (332 x 265 x 313 mm), serial number 722.

Crocker-Wheeler Electric Motor Company was founded in 1889 by Francis B. Crocker and Schuyler S. Wheeler after the dissolution of C. & C. Electric Motor Co. The company was reincorporated in late 1891 as the Crocker-Wheeler Electric Co, as with the present lot, which predates the company’s move to Ampere, New Jersey. Crocker-Wheeler’s motors were well respected and used in factories, workshops, offices and homes powering everything from elevators to drills, fans and sewing machines.

The present motor bears a plaque at the top that includes the company’s earlier, New York location. It also includes the patent date of May 5. 1891, and lists the speed at 1000 (rpm), the amperage at 4 and the voltage at 115.
