Cartier, London

Under the direction of Jean-Jacques Cartier, the London branch of Cartier became the most unconventional of the three maisons, embracing bold forms and larger case designs that reflected the creative spirit of 1960s London. At its core, Cartier has always been driven by design, and few models express this more clearly than the Baignoire.

Named for its distinctive bathtub-shaped case, the Baignoire has become an enduring icon within the Cartier repertoire. The present London example, bearing the coveted “JC” stamp and 1965 English hallmarks for 18k gold, is particularly noteworthy. Research suggests that Baignoire models fitted with gold bracelets were produced in extremely limited numbers—only three are believed to have been sold through the London boutique. One was acquired by acclaimed actor Laurence Harvey, another one by American director Josef Losey and a third one by another a gentleman from the film industry.

Having previously handled the other two known examples, Sotheby’s is pleased to offer the present lot, which retains very attractive proportions. This watch stands as a significant piece from Cartier London’s most creative era.
