In the 1970s, when Rolex introduced hardstone dials for the Day-Date and Datejust, the concept was initially met with hesitation. Most authorised retailers did not stock these unconventional variants, which were typically available only by special order at an additional cost.
The Rolex Day-Date itself holds a singular place in horological history as the first wristwatch to display the full day of the week at 12 o’clock alongside the date at 3 o’clock, paired with the iconic “President” bracelet. Following early references, the model evolved into the celebrated reference 1803 in 1959, featuring a 36 mm case, fluted bezel, and a range of precious metal options.
The present example is particularly distinguished by its inky black onyx dial. A form of chalcedony prized for its deep, uniform tone, onyx has long been associated with strength and protection, even carried by Roman soldiers as talismans. Here, the stone is flawlessly executed, with no hour markers, allowing the pure black surface and gilt signature to take centre stage. The result is a strikingly minimal and refined aesthetic that perfectly captures the understated elegance collectors so highly value today.
