Description
Paolo Pagani
Valsolda 1665 - 1716 Milan
Jupiter and Mercury
oil on canvas
canvas: 44 ⅜ by 57 ¾ in.; 112.7 by 146.7 cm.
framed: 51 ⅛ by 64 ½ in.; 129.9 by 163.8 cm.
In this large and dramatic composition, Paolo Pagani renders the two Olympian gods locked in combat. Their muscular physiques, contorted into acrobatic positions, as much as the dramatic use of chiaroscuro, imbue the work with a striking dynamism. In conception, scale, and conceit, the present work possesses salient analogies with the Fall of the Giants in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Tours.
We are grateful to Professor Alessandro Morandotti for endorsing the attribution to Pagani.
