A native of Vienna, Albert Janesch exhibited widely throughout his home country and experienced great success during his lifetime. The artist’s oeuvre includes portraits, landscapes and still lifes. He trained at the Graphic Arts Teaching and Research Institute and the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Awards granted, among many, include the Prix de Rome (1912), Prize of the City of Vienna (1924, 1929, and 1937) and the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art (1954). He served as a war artist working in Belgrade, Trieste, and on the Turkish front during World War I — he later served in France, Russia and Greece during World War II. Many of his military paintings from the period are located in the Museum of Military History in Vienna.
