Going Deeper - Kiké Hernández - Legend of October
Known for his postseason heroics, Hernández played a pivotal role in helping the Dodgers reach the 2020 World Series. In Game 7 of the National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves, he was called upon to pinch-hit for Joc Pederson in the bottom of the sixth inning. On the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Hernández launched a game-tying home run off Braves relief pitcher A.J. Minter. The Dodgers went on to win 4-3, securing their place in the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays. They ultimately won the Series in six games, capturing their first title since 1988.
Hernández’s postseason success didn’t stop in Los Angeles. On February 2, 2021 he signed a two-year deal with the Boston Red Sox. Despite falling in the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros, Hernández had a historic postseason as he batted .408 with five home runs. During his Postseason hot stretch, Hernández recorded 13 hits in a 4-game span, setting the record for most hits in a 4-game span of a single Postseason.
On July 25 2023, Hernández returned to Dodger Blue after being traded from the Red Sox. Although the Dodgers were swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2023 National League Division Series, Hernández and the team found themselves back in postseason contention for 2024.
In a win-or-go-home game during the 2024 National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres, Hernández jumpstarted the Dodgers’ offense with a towering solo home run off Padres starting pitcher, Yu Darvish. The Dodgers went on to win 2-0, advancing to the National League Championship Series to face the New York Mets.
In Game 3 of the NLCS, Hernández’s sixth-inning wall-scraping home run opened the floodgates for the Dodgers’ offense, as they went on to win the game 8-0 and take a 2-1 series lead. The home run etched Hernández’s name into the record books, making him just the 20th player in MLB history to reach 15 career postseason home runs, further cementing his status as a Legend of October. The Dodgers went on to win the series 4-2, advancing to the World Series to face Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees.
Hernández carried his timely hitting into the World Series. In the sixth inning of Game 3, Hernández hit a sharp ground ball up the middle that scored a run, helping to extend the Dodgers’ lead, a game in which they ultimately won, giving them a 3-0 series lead.
After falling in Game 4, the Dodgers looked to shut the door on the Yankees season and capture their second World Series title in four years. Trailing 5-0 in the fifth inning with two outs and the bases loaded, Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts hit a soft ground ball that scored Hernández from third, sparking a rally that would change the course of the game.
By the eighth inning, the Dodgers were within one run. Hernández led off the inning with a sharp line-drive single to left field. A few batters later, Gavin Lux lifted a deep fly ball to center, scoring Hernández from third and tying the game up at 6-6 on the sacrifice fly. Just two batters later, Tommy Edman would score the go-ahead run as the Dodgers took the lead 7-6. Walker Buehler was called on to pitch the ninth and sealed the victory by striking out Alex Verdugo for the final out. For the first time since 2020, the Los Angeles Dodgers were World Series champions once again.
Hernández, a two-time World Series champion, has career postseason numbers of .278 batting average, 15 home runs, 35 runs batted in, and an OPS of .874. Look for him to continue his postseason magic as the Dodgers look to secure their second consecutive World Series.
