Marianne Faithfull got to know Karl Lagerfeld while living in Paris. He made a large number of pieces for her over the years that she wore both onstage and in private. Marianne first wore the white jacket with black lace when she attended the Chanel 2014/2015 Autumn/Winter Ready-To-Wear collection fashion show, on 4th March 2014 at the Grand Palais in Paris. Later that year Marianne was photographed wearing it again by Giasco Bertoli for the September 2014 edition of Purple Magazine.

Marianne wore her navy blue sequined ensemble at a special acoustic concert with guitar legend Bill Frissell at the intimate Parisian Jazz club 'The New Morning' on 9th February 2013. The jacket can be seen in fan recorded clips of some of the performance uploaded to youtube including this one: https://youtu.be/v6_DG4blqWs?si=0ZSTFAUxkkn1N-1v

The jacket also features in Marianne’s visual memoir 'A Life On Record’ published by Rizzoli. It is shown on a hanger on the back of a door in an image shot in her former Paris apartment on Rue d’Anjou.

The black Chanel jacket was worn in promotional portraits taken by Patrick Swirc for her 2011 album ‘Horses And High Heels’.

Marianne's love for fashion has been evident throughout her career; it has been an integral part of the 'Marianne Faithfull' image. She discusses fashion's significance in her life:

'Clothes have always been very important. To feel exquisitely dressed allowed me to become ‘Marianne Faithfull’, to feel ready. I’ve known so many of the great designers and they were all necessary in helping me create the ‘fabulous beast’ – my public persona.'

In her memoir, Marianne states:

‘To be exquisitely dressed is essential paraphernalia for the Marianne Faithfull persona.’

Marianne remembers her time in Paris with Karl Lagerfeld with affection, showing great admiration for the late fashion designer:

'I got to know Karl a bit when I lived in Paris and he would invite me to shows - I remember he did some wonderful ones at the Grand Palais that were very grand; like a film set. I love what he did at Chanel and you can’t go wrong with a Chanel jacket, it’s like wearing professional armour. Fashion isn’t always practical but a Chanel jacket is. Karl was very kind, very intelligent, an intellectual really. He had a large collection of books and we were both voracious readers. He was so knowledgeable about all sorts of things which made him interesting to spend time with.'
