In theatres this November, Gladiator II returns to Sir Ridley Scott’s ancient Rome as Lucius - played by Paul Mescal - only a child in the first film, must now enter the Colosseum as an adult after the tyrannical emperors conquer his home. In a memorable sequence featured in the film's viral first official trailer, the gladiator 'Glyceo' enters the arena astride a rhinoceros, for which a YouTube link can be found below:
Gladiator II also sees the emperors’ bloodthirst reaching new heights, introducing animal threats to the Colosseum for the first time. The present lot is a hero costume from a teased scene in the upcoming film where Mescal’s Lucius faces off with Glyceo, a gladiator who enters the Colosseum atop an armoured rhinoceros. Almost mirroring the animal he fights astride, Glyceo’s costume is heavily armoured, leaving almost no skin bare or vulnerable to attack—in contrast to the less armoured, light and agile armour of the gladiators on the ground, like Lucuis.
For Gladiator II, Scott reunited with his longtime collaborator and costume designer for the original Gladiator, Janty Yates. Since winning the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for the first film, Scott and Yates have collaborated 17 times. To round out Gladiator II’s costume team, Yates brought in David Crossman—the pair most recently working together on 2023’s Napoleon, another vision from the mind of Sir Ridley Scott that went on to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design in 2024.
Sir Ridley Scott, visionary director of Gladiator (2000) and its upcoming sequel Gladiator II (2024), comments of the present Lot:
"Among the treasures up for auction is one of Janty Yates’ incredible costumes from Gladiator II, a film that, like its predecessor, holds a special place in my heart. Donating this piece feels like sharing a fragment of the epic journey that has brought us here—a journey marked by creativity, collaboration, and resilience."
Sotheby's would like to thank Sir Ridley Scott for his words and support for The Film and Television Charity.
The Consignor (The Film and Television Charity) is donating 100% of the hammer price from the sale of this Lot, to be sold in Sotheby’s Popular Culture online sale held from 29 August – 12 September 2024.
