This drawing and also lot 334 are both examples of Goll van Franckenstein's great skill at capturing the elegance and atmosphere of the locations along the river Vecht, to the south-east of Amsterdam, where many of the city's wealthy merchant families had their summer residences (see also lot 362).

Johan Goll van Franckenstein, a member of a leading (and subsequently ennobled) family, was not only an accomplished draughtsman and painter, and a significant collector, but also initiated the publication of a ground-breaking series of prints which reproduce, using newly developed techniques, drawings and watercolors by earlier artists, with highly convincing, sometimes very deceptive, results.
