Edo period, 19th century
woodblock print, surimono, embellished with metallic pigments and embossing, from the series A Selection of Horses (Umazukushi), signed Fusenkyo Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, from in his non-painting studio), privately issued in 1822
Surimono, shikishiban: 20.6 x 18.6 cm., 8⅛ x 7⅜ in.
Blue and white porcelain vessels set with bonsai or other plants and foliage, often feature in Hokusai's work. The poem by Sanseitei Marumi has been translated by Roger Keyes in The Art of Surimono, (London, 1985) no. 200:
In the rays
