Cornelis van de Velde was the youngest son of the celebrated Dutch marine painter, Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633–1707). He was baptised in Amsterdam's Zuiderkerk on 16 May 1674 but spent almost his whole life living in England, where he worked in the studio of his father at Greenwich. This painting reveals the strong influence of his father's late style, particularly in his use of a warm colour palette. The overall format and certain elements of the composition are comparable to a painting attributed to his father and studio, sold by Sotheby's in 2019.1
