A PAIR OF WEDGWOOD STYLE BLACK BASALT 'FISH TAIL' EWER VASES 20TH CENTURY


non-period, non-factory, modeled after the engraving by Jacques Stella (1596-1657), each of urn shape, affixed on either side with a mask handle terminal or spout joined by a Greek key band at the shoulder, the cover issuing a long curving scaly fish-tail handle, raised on a square base, one with embossed WEDGWOOD & BENTLEY ETRURIA. circular mark, the other with applied medallion embossed WEDGWOOD & BENTLEY ETRURIA..

Heights 11⅞ and 11¾ in.

This vase is based on the design by the French sculptor Edmé Bouchardon (Chaumont 1698-1762 Paris), which was published after his death in Premier Livre De Vases Inventés par Edmé Bouchardon Sculpteur du Roy, with engravings by Gabriel Huquier (1695-1772). A second vase of this rare form is illustrated in Captain M. H. Grant, The Makers of Black Basaltes, London, 1967, pl. XXII, no. 1.
