A PAIR OF FRENCH PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE GREY-GROUND RECTANGULAR PLAQUES CIRCA 1865
decorated by Marc Louis Solon, one incised M, the other MILES, each decorated in white slip with a seated female figure wearing a diaphanous costume, one holding a candle with four cupids flying around it, the other holding a vase of flowers with three flying cupids, reserved on a mottled-grey ground, enriched with gilt foliage, both incised Rousseau/Paris, letter R, inscribed Rousseau/ rue Coquilliére/ Paris, partially legible script 'no 100/ Pates ce (?)/ blanc decor c 4 (?)/ No - ch...', framed.

Eugène Rousseau was a Paris dealer in ceramics, glass and objets d'art. Bumpus, 1992, p. 52, cites Solon's encounter with Rousseau: "'One day when we were chatting together about the various decorative schemes he was anxious to bring out, he asked me whether I would not undertake to make for him a few small pieces, vases and plaques, decorated by the new process [pâte-sur-pâte]... All I did under these conditions was signed 'Miles', a name which contained my three initials, M.L.S.'" Bumpus further notes on p. 53 that "despite Solon's statement that he signed his productions 'Miles', many are unsigned."
