Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 19 October 1943, lot 103 (as Evert Marseus);
Acquired at the above sale by Norddeutsche Kreditbank AG., Bremen and on deposit at the Bremen Kunsthalle;
Recovered by the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives section of the Allied Forces at the end of WWII;
Given to the custody of the Austrian Government on 27 February 1948 (according to a label on the reverse);
Held in trust by the Austrian State until transferred to the Federation of Austrian Jewish Communities and sold for the benefit of the victims of the Holocaust;
Mauerbach benefit sale, Vienna, Christie's, 29–30 October 1996, lot 49;
Private collection, USA;

Although this painting has previously been attributed to Jacob de Villeers, it was Marijke de Kinkelder of the R.K.D., The Hague, who rightly identified it as a work by Jan Looten.
