This subject clearly appealed to Van Troyen, the tomb of Lazarus set as it is in a series of caves, lending the artist the opportunity to characteristically depict the play of light and dark over the fantastical rocky, earthy surfaces and the undergrowth.
Another treatment of the scene, also signed and dated 1647, is in the Staatliches Museum Schwerin, Schwerin.[1] Another, signed and dated 1650, was exhibited at the Severine Gallery, New York, October – November 1969.
