A pupil of David Teniers the Younger, Helmont was established as a member of the Antwerp Guild by 1646. He later moved to Brussels when he is recorded in a guild there in 1674. The existence of several Italianate market scenes suggest he may have travelled to Italy. He was mainly a genre painter, but also painted still lifes and contributed figures to landscapes by Jacques d'Arthois.
