Edith Wharton

Twelve Poems. London: The Medici Society, 1926

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, NUMBER 23 OF 130 SIGNED COPIES, ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, 8vo, original boards, dust-jacket, housed in grey quarter morocco slipcase, with compartment on front flap of case containing 1p autograph letter signed to dedicatee of inscription, prelims slightly spotted, dust-jacket split along upper joint with some loss at spine ends, letter with slight creasing, spotting, and closed tear at folds

Inscribed by the author: "For Rutger Jewett, with Christmas best wishes, Edith Wharton, 1926". Rutger Bleecker Jewett (1867-1935) was her friend, advisor and editor at Appleton, the New York publisher of many of her novels. In the accompanying autograph letter signed to Jewett, dated Jan 1 1931, Wharton sends him "best wishes for a happy new year", thanks him for his recent Christmas present to her, and assures him that she has "a stern resolution of getting to work again tomorrow".

During WW1, Wharton famously travelled by car with Walter Berry to the front line to report on the war for Scribner's Magazine.
