Gaston Casimir Saint-Pierre made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1861 with the present work (the exhibition label is still on the frame), a portrait of a man identified only by the initials E. G. Saint-Pierre continued to exhibit at the Paris Salon regularly for the next fifty years, becoming a member in 1883 and later active on both the committee and jury. He was awarded a second-class medal in 1879 and inducted into the Legion d'Honneur in 1881, becoming an officer in 1903. In addition to society portraits and mythological subjects, Casimir Saint-Pierre exhibited Orientalist paintings informed by his multiple trips to North Africa. During his long career, he was awarded commissions to decorate the foyer of the theater in Nîmes, the choir of the Cathedral in Oran, and the ceiling of the Train Bleu restaurant in Paris, near the Gare de Lyon.
