Born in Switzerland, Johann Gottfried Steffan moved to Munich in 1833, where he studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste and the Polytechnikum. Impressed by Carl Rottmann’s Italian landscapes, Steffan decided to devote himself to landscape painting of lake and mountain scenes.
