This delightful study of a bearded man is an unfinished portrait of a man employed by the artist, as identified in the inscription at upper right, which he realized in 1845 in Rome. Having first studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under François-Joseph Navez, whose daughter he later married, Portaels then worked under Paul Delaroche in Paris where he won the Prix de Rome in 1842. He traveled extensively in Italy, North Africa, Spain, Hungary, and Norway. He held professorial positions at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and Brussels where he was appointed Director in 1878 until his death in 1895.
