傳為唐紹儀 (1862-1938) 舊藏

Tang Shaoyi (1868-1932) was an important political figure at the end of the Qing dynasty. Close to Yuan Shikai, he became in 1912 the first Prime Minister of the Republic of China.

The group of four flowers—prunus, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum—form the rebus mei lan zhu ju, "four gentlemen among flowers." The four gentlemen accomplishments are he symbolized by the bamboo which is associated with strength and scholarship, the chrysanthemum which represents pleasure and entertainment, the orchid for rarity and refinement and the prunus for vitality and longevity.
