Among the many extracurricular activities available to students and faculty at the Bauhaus was its jazz band, founded by Theatre Workshop member Andreas (Andor) Weininger. The group performed improvised melodies inspired by eastern European folk music, often accompanied by dramatic lighting and sound effects. T. Lux Feininger – a Bauhaus Dessau student from 1926 to 1929 who played banjo and clarinet in the band – chronicled the exuberance of the performers through his raucous, lighthearted photographs.
