Ivona Tau

Ivona Tau is an AI artist and researcher who works with artificial intelligence as a medium in visual arts. A core element of Ivona's work lies in the intersection of arts and photography with new technologies and machine learning. Her goal is to find and evoke emotions in the artificially intelligent tools, this way making them more human. By creating art and collaborating with the machine, she also explores her inner emotional states.

Ivona Tau comes from the intersection of arts and technology, with 15 years combined experience in professional photography and artificial intelligence research. She is currently pursuing a PhD at Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology, Multimedia department. She has been awarded the best award in the Digital Ars 2020 contest dedicated to art creation with AI for her two projects: "These humans did not feel" and "Unseen Warsaw". Her work has been exhibited at galleries and showcases worldwide, including Ars Electronica Garden NYC, Stratosphere Beijing, Crypto Art Week Asia and others. She is one of the most prominent artists on the rapidly growing NFT scene, trending on popular platforms Foundation and Hic Et Nunc.

VISIONS: Reflected

For Boundless Space… The Possibilities of Burning Man, Ivona presents VISIONS: Reflected, a new work introduced uniquely for this show. The visuals, while reminiscent of photography works, are 100% generative and created as a result of GAN (generative adversarial network) training on custom photography collections, consisting mostly of Ivona's personal memories frozen on the digital medium as well as analog films. By carefully curating inputs and outputs of the model, Ivona is exploring the balance between accident and control. Artificial nightscapes serve as a reflection of our personal experiences, as seen in the eyes of the machine.

The Making of VISIONS: Reflected

With this work, Ivona invites a viewer to contemplate his own interpretations and find familiarity in the ambiguous shapes. The more we engage with artificial realities, the more meanings get constructed by our perception. As our minds are accustomed to discrete representations of objects, they get confused by continuously generated morphings between visually indeterminate imagery. This way artificial Intelligence fills in the gaps between visual concepts and it reminds us of the subconscious and free-flowing dreams. Visual concepts disintegrate and come into focus during the latent space traversal of the machine learning models in a similar manner to our thoughts and imperfect memories flowing freely.

Tau writes, "This work feels very personal to me as I recognize in it the scenes from a very important while difficult period in my life. The setting sun reflected in artificial windows also symbolizes the hope and positive perspective on otherwise dark moments."
