Mirrors were a recurring prop used by Woodman in her images from the late 1970s, particularly when she was studying abroad in Rome. After placing mirrors flat on the floor or leaning against walls, Woodman photographed herself interacting with the reflective surface, often crawling on or around them. Even though she had the opportunity to photograph in unusual locations, such as an abandoned pasta factory and the basement under RISD’s Palazzo Cenci building, she still utilized the same working method as she had in Providence, wherein she returned to a few select locations and used limited props and clothing.

Francesca Woodman, Self-Deceit 1, 1978

In the present image, Woodman’s subject stands motionless at the extreme left side of the frame, her face blurred and partially cropped. The repeating oval shapes within the mirrors and hard diagonals created by the bedroom furniture contribute to the layered, complex composition.

Prints of this image are exceptionally rare; no other examples have appeared at auction.
