T
he artist explores the potential of ‘mapping’ body space with boldly physical sculptures that increase the dynamic between space and mass.
Gormley’s Cast Beamer works, of which CAST VII is one, deconstruct and reassemble the interior volume of the body through interlocking beams that run in all three axes and touch the surface of the volume at both ends.
These works are an evolution of the early Blockworks and the recent Blockers series. They describe the body in terms of the tectonics of post and lintel architecture and attempt to translate body mass into the equivalent of a high-rise tower.
Life-size in scale, they represent a body in unstable moments of rest—from crouching to fully erect. Most of the early BEAMERS have a clockwork twist with the head turned 90 degrees from the feet.
