Edith Lawrence is best known for her landscapes and portraits, which she explored through a variety of media, including painting, colour linocut and textile design. Her subjects are taken from her travels around Britain and Europe, where she was joined by her lifelong partner Claude Flight. Lawrence was first introduced to textiles as a student of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, and continued to experiment with the medium as she founded with Flight a business of interior decoration in 1927. In the present work, she combines naturalism and decorativeness as colourful zig-zag patterns are repeated throughout the composition.
