“Beauty for me is not just visual, it is also experiential. I want the viewer to come away not necessarily knowing what I was trying to tell them about, say, my birth experience, but absorbing an impression of brightness or richness or radiance that has something to do with their relationship to their own body.”
—Loie Hollowell, Plumb Line, Pace Gallery New York, Sep – Oct 2019, Press release

A t once beguiling, sensual and sacred, Standing in Red (2019) is emblematic of New York-based artist Loie Hollowell’s highly acclaimed oeuvre. Evoking the mystic energy of symbolic iconography, the present work demonstrates Hollowell’s characteristic synthesizing of light, colour and form to produce powerful compositions which explore the female body. Undulating with pulsating rhythms and radiant patterns, Standing in Red expands upon the artist’s dynamic use of dimensionality, colour and abstract geometries to compose otherworldly landscapes that challenge our perceptions of the relationship between the body and space. Born in Woodland, California in 1982, Hollowell studied fine art at the University of California in Santa Barbara, graduating with a BFA in 2005. Originating in autobiography, her work explores themes of sexuality, pregnancy and birth. Whilst utilising symbolic shapes such as the mandorla, ogee, and lingam to build her distinctive visual lexicon, in referencing her own personal experiences, Hollowell’s paintings are at once personal and universal in their bold vulnerability.

Arranged in modular forms along sculptural lines, the radiating energy of the pulsating red half-spheres of Standing in Red draws the viewer’s gaze into the central compositional line. Interrupting the two-dimensionality of the painted surface with high-density, geometric forms, Hollowell extends the physical presence of her work. From afar, Standing in Red appears flat, yet as the viewer moves closer, these three-dimensional shapes and the intricate textures of the artist’s brushwork emerge. Delicate laceworks of pigment produce a tangible, hair-like texture on the canvas, imbuing the present work with a fierce physicality, an effect only heightened by the scale of the work. Measuring to the height of the artist’s fully erect frame, Standing in Red is amongst the largest and most structural work of Hollowell’s to date. Using symmetry, colour and abstract iconography, Hollowell maps a cartography of psychic space, using her own body as a reference point. A mesmerising example of the frisson between the visceral and the spiritual, the climax of this work constructs notions of the female nude, arousing intangible experiences and emotions particularly tied to the female condition.

Characterized by her impeccably vibrating gradients that expand, contract, merge and converge, Hollowell's paintings straddle abstraction and figuration, painting and sculpture, articulating autobiographical themes and physical and psychological experiences such as sexuality, fertility, and childbirth. Frequently compared to important American artists Georgia O'Keefe and Judy Chicago, Hollowell deliberately draws upon this lineage, encouraging erotic readings of her works beyond that of her predecessors. The vibrant hues and rounded design of the present work elevates the singular flatness of geometrical abstraction into a visceral and seductive sculptural sphere. Highly sought after, Loie Hollowell's artworks have featured in group and solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Britain, and Hong Kong. In 2021, an exhibition at Shanghai's Long Museum marked the artist's first solo museum show in mainland China.

DETAIL OF THE PRESENT WORK
