C omfort and nostalgia often permeate from Miki Kariya’s works, depicting mundane life and recording what she observes in her life through creation. Innocent and childlike lines depict the tranquil night view of Tokyo’s cityscape in Tokyo Night (Lot 46), while a bunny with cutesy mushrooms populate her whimsical piece Don’t Eat Me!  (Lot 45). By coating the board with acrylic before rubbing it over with sandpaper to create a vintage effect, the pieces resemble gently faded old paintings, adding a sense of nostalgia and warmth. Kariya adds creativity and fantasy to her compositions, accentuated by striking colours and emanating a sense of endearment and adoration to living and the mundane.
