I believe that Man’s first real figurative experience is the recognition of his own image in the mirror: the fiction which comes closest to reality. But it is not long before the reflection begins to send back the same unknowns, the same questions, the same problems, as reality itself: unknowns and questions which Man is driven to re-propose in the form of pictures…. The figurative object born of this action allows me to pursue my inquiry within the picture as within life, given that the two entities are figuratively connected. I do indeed find myself inside the picture, beyond the wall which is perforated (though not, of course, in a material sense) by the mirror. On the contrary, since I cannot enter it physically, if I am to inquire into the structure of art, I must make the picture move outwards into reality, creating the “fiction” of being myself “beyond the looking glass.”

Credo che la prima vera esperienza figurativa dell'uomo sia il riconoscimento della propria immagine allo specchio: la finzione che si avvicina di più alla realtà. Ma non passa molto tempo prima che la riflessione cominci a rimandare le stesse incognite, le stesse domande, gli stessi problemi, come la realtà stessa: incognite e domande che l'Uomo è spinto a riproporre in forma di immagini…. L'oggetto figurativo nato da questa azione mi permette di perseguire la mia indagine dentro il quadro come dentro la vita, dato che le due entità sono figurativamente connesse. Mi ritrovo infatti dentro il quadro, al di là del muro che è perforato (anche se non, ovviamente, in senso materiale) dallo specchio. Al contrario, poiché non posso entrarvi fisicamente, se devo indagare sulla struttura dell'arte, devo fare in modo che l'immagine si muova verso l'esterno nella realtà, creando la "finzione" di essere me stesso "oltre lo specchio".
